Artifact is best described as a warm, smoky blue that brings a steady sense of calm to both residential and commercial spaces.
October 16, 2026
By: David Savastano
We live in times that can best be described as tumultuous and evolving. Heading into 2027, one of the most overriding trends that leading paint companies are seeing is homeowners is looking to create calming, tranquil spaces. For Pittsburgh Paints, this played a role in selecting Artifact (PPG10-16), a warm, smoky blue, as its 2027 Color of the Year.
Pittsburgh Paints selected Artifact as the 2027 Color of the Year as it reflects a collective desire to return to what once felt steady and defined our homes and spaces,” says Michelle Vincent, Pittsburgh Paints color and design manager. “It’s a familiar, enduring blue that imitates a protective cocoon or haven of safety. We believe homeowners and professionals will find that Artifact brings calmness to both residential and commercial spaces by restoring and renewing. It creates space to recalibrate and lean on authenticity over perfection.”
Vincent says that Artifact is easy to live with and incredibly versatile in living spaces.
“Artifact is a warm, smoky blue,” Vincent notes. “It pulls from the vitality of greens and the depth and fluidity of blues while adapting and channeling nature-inspired energy.
“The test of a great color is that it works just as well on exteriors as on interiors,” Vincent adds. “Artifact delivers inside and out. It works well to reset a living room or shared space. In kitchens, it provides character and breaks up all-white or all-neutral looks when used on cabinets. Outside, it blends well with nature and landscaping, making it a color that can be lived with and enjoyed long term.”
Warm Mahogany, Pittsburgh Paints’ 2026 Color of the Year, is a rich, warm-toned and timeless red. Vincent says that Artifact pairs nicely with Warm Mahogany.
“Warm Mahogany is rooted in nostalgia and tradition, while Artifact recalibrates and invites reflection, calling us to pause, reassess and reconnect with what’s essential and gives meaning to our lives,” Vincent observes. “Artifact pairs nicely with Warm Mahogany and brings warm and cool tones together in a fresh way. In the year ahead, use Artifact as your main wall color, then layer in Warm Mahogany accents.”
As part of the Pittsburgh Paints 2027 color and design forecast, Pittsburgh Paints identified three key design collections – Foundations Collection, In Motion Collection and Resolution Collection – that Vincent says all work beautifully with Artifact.
“Foundations Collection creates spaces that feel grounded, clear and purposeful,” Vincent says. “Pair Artifact with anchoring hues like Smoky Slate (PPG1028-4), Thyme Green (PPG1128-6) and Chocolate Truffle (PPG15-13) to create a strong foundation for reflection and for recalibration to begin.
“In Motion Collection embraces change as an active, ongoing process,” she adds. “Within this collection, colors such as Smoky Orchid (PPG1179-2), Nostalgia (PPG1049-3) and C’est La Vie (PPG1120-6) introduce greater contrast and expression, reflect spaces that adapt, respond and evolve alongside the people who use them. Bold, unexpected tones work well with Artifact and invite experimentation and personalization, capturing the energy of environments in transition and the freedom to adjust along the way.
“Resolution Collection settles into a state of quiet alignment, where every space feels balanced, refined and complete,” Vincent notes. “Pair Artifact with a thoughtful blend of hues like Craftsman Gold (PPG1092-4), Juniper Berry (PPG1145-6) and Discover (PPG1021-3) for both depth and calm and to move away from excess toward thoughtful curation.”
Vincent says she believes that for 2027, homeowners and professionals will choose colors like Artifact that are rooted in longevity and reflect personal style preferences.
“Artifact does just this, feeling grounded, familiar and reassuring across various segments from residential to hospitality, retail, healthcare/wellness, multi-family/mixed use, workplace and education settings,” Vincent concludes.
